THE STORY OF US » How We Met » How the Flamingos Met...

posted 2 years ago

During my graphic design studies, I worked as a part time cashier at a modern furniture store. I often saw people come in give their CV (resume) and leave right after. But this day was different. This guy came in, gave his CV but didn’t want to leave. He wanted to meet the big boss and wanted an interview on the spot. Talk about being sure of yourself. Either way, I called the manager at the time, and I don’t know how he did it, but he was hired! Oh and that was Mr. Flamingo by the way.

As soon as he started, he was on my back. For a good 8 months, day after day he would ask me to go to the movies with him and I every time I would decline his offer. I didn’t really like Mr. Flamingo at the time, actually, he even drove me nuts. He was all talk and no show and I didn’t like guys like that… not to be mean but he didn’t interest me.

One cold rainy night in October I felt like going to the movies after my work shift. I called all my friends but no one was available to go. So when Mr. Flamingo made his daily pit-stop at my cash register, I mentioned that I felt like seeing a movie and that no one could make it. I wasn’t thinking about what I had just said, and he offered to go with me. At that moment, I said to myself why not give it a try and at the same time, maybe he would stop inviting me.

I had a rule though when it came to watching movies. I would only watch the movie in its original soundtrack (the majority being English movies), but Mr. Flamingo speaks French. He was fine with my rule but asked if he could choose the movie. I was willing to compromise so I was okay with that… if only I knew. We went to the movie theater, M.Flamingo bought the tickets and when I looked down, I read: Chainsaw Massacre! Talk about a first movie.

After that night, we kept going to see movies. I started to know the real Mr. Flamingo; a sweet, kind, good-hearted person - not the all show, I know everything guy I got to know at work. We kept seeing each other for over 2 months and officially started dating: in December 2003. That’s how our story began…

THE STORY OF US » The Proposal » The Flamingos non-proposal...

posted 2 years ago

After we came home from a family party on Christmas Eve, Mr. Flamingo and I decided to open our gifts at the stroke of midnight for the whole “magic” aspect of Christmas, and because it was our first real Christmas together. We started dating 2 weeks prior to the 25th the previous year, so in my eyes it didn’t really count as our first Christmas together.

After opening all our presents, I noticed there was a little red and gold box left. I was completely clueless of what was about to happen. My sweetie grabbed the box and then proposed to me, and of course I accepted. But there was no getting down on one knee, no champagne to celebrate, nothing. At the moment I was ecstatic about the whole idea of getting married, but at the same time I was a little disappointed that the proposal wasn’t quite what I had imagined it would be.

I found out later on that Mr. Flamingo asked my father for his permission first before proposing. I thought that was a nice gesture on his part, and by doing that he definitely gained points. The ring was exactly what I wanted, so his good taste deserved some points too. Now, we simply laugh about the whole thing.

Theme: vintage glam wedding, circa the 1940s.

I had created this inspiration board to have an idea and feel of what our overall theme would look like. Our wedding theme changed a little in the planning process. When I first created my inspiration board, I was going for my pinks, golds, champagne colors and more a vintage modern approach. Then, it shifted to a 1940s brown and ivory movie vintage theme. Honestly I really like how our wedding came out, and if I were to do it again, it would be exactly the same.

DETAILS » Invitations » La Piece de Resistance

The invitation is a classic A7 single card (printed on both sides). First things first - I knew I wanted a pattern because they are pretty… but mostly since it would play an important role in our cake design (explanation coming soon). Secondly, I wanted the invitation to have movement, that’s why I didn’t place all the text flush left

For the RSVP I decided to go the Postcard route. I think this is an excellent idea for all you eco-friendly brides. Cost efficient and less paper… what could be better than that.I kept the idea of the pattern to keep a consistency in the design. As for the other side, I found an image of an old clock (which happened to be NYC) and with the use of Live Trace in Adobe Illustrator CS2, I was able to create this unique vector image. I love the feel of transforming a photo to a vector… it automatically makes it more vintage looking.

Since we are getting married at a hotel, I needed accommodations card to advise our guests of special rates. I really love this piece… maybe it’s because of the vintage looking hotel on the card. I bascially used the same steps to transform a photo to a vector image. The colors might change slightly depending on the color of the envelopes. And of course some tweaking will occur… but overall I love it. I am really happy with the outcome.
