THE STORY OF US » The Proposal » Full of Hot Air & A Minor Heart Attack

posted 1 year ago

Our proposal story is one that almost gave me a heart attack, and not because of the proposal!  I met my  fiancée back in 2001 and the timing was just off for us.  About a year and half ago we reconnected and not to sound utterly cheesy, but it was totally fireworks.   We both knew we were it for each other and I couldn’t be more beside myself that he loves me!

Now for the groundwork to an almost heart attack!  Over this past July 4th weekend, we travelled up to his family’s house in Stowe, Vermont.  When we arrived, I went up to the room we normally stay in, to discover a dark haired girl sitting on our bed.  I was in totally shock and couldn’t place who she was until I realized it was my lifelong Blonde little sister, with black hair!  I might add that she lives in California, so I was completely in shock!   So the first secret was that my then boyfriend had secretly flown her in, in the name of not having seen her in so long.  The funny thing is, when I saw her in the room, I thought there is no way in hell he proposing this weekend.  I actually thought that, haha!

We all had an amazing couple of days, and then July 4th rolled around.  We had a jam packed day of horseback riding, alpine slide, swimming and so on. When we got back to the house, I went into the back and crashed out on the hammock.  I didn’t realize it at the time, but my sister kept a constant eye on me, to make sure I didn’t leave it!  After a while in the hammock, my boyfriend comes up and asks me to put on my hiking boots, as we are going to take a walk.  I knew something was up, but proposal was not at all on my mind.

As we walked around to the front of the house, I hear a noise I recognize but it is totally out of place.  When we get to the front of the house, I see a hot air balloon being blown up!!   My first thought was OMG he totally has to propose now!!   Followed by OMG I am going how high into the sky?!?!?!  Needless to say, I was a touch scared out of my mind.  We had a rough take off, as the basket actually slammed into the van, but we ultimately got into the sky.   We were up there for a long time and it was truly so amazing.   However, I wasn’t a fan of anyone moving around in the basket!  I was honestly…scared! Haha.   We were up in the sky for what seemed like an eternity and no proposal!  I thought to myself, oh, maybe he really is just being super sweet…

We were commenting on how amazing the views were, and then he tells me that there is another reason that we were up there, and I knew it!!  He asked me to spend forever with him and do him the honor of being his wife!  He proposed roughly 4800 feet in the sky!!  I’m not a huge crier but my face hurt so badly from grinning so hard!

The funny thing about hot air balloons, you can’t control when or where you land them!  So we ended up being in the air twice the normal length of time, as we simply had no place to land.  It was all forest!  Eventually we found a super small town that we had a good shot of landing in.  We finally put the balloon down and my fiancée actually had to help drive it over a small hill.

The town that we landed in was so small, that the people that lived there actually got into their cars and came to see us land!  There had to be close to 50 people there.  The kids were all super excited to get to see a balloon, and they actually got to help take it down.

The even more amazing thing is, the town newspaper showed up and did a story on us!  So as a happy accident, we actually made the front page of the local paper with a follow up story on another page with 4 pictures in total.

It was by far the most amazing thing anyone has ever done for me and I feel so truly lucky that someone loves me so much!
