During Christmas 2009 my parents surprised my fiance (lol, feels great to write that) and I with a vacation to Portugal where I was born and still have a ton of family. I told FI of how when I was little we used to wear our best sunday clothes to Church but we'd also wear our swimsuits underneath because our church was on top of a cliff leading to the beach/ocean and as soon as church was over, all the kids headed to the beach. I told him about the great views and the beautiful sunsets/sunrises.
Well I guess it was at Christmas that he decided he was going to propose during our vacation! I didn't know it then, but he had packed the ring in his carry-on which he never let out of his sight! I didn't even notice that the carry-on was attached at his hip the whole time.
We arrived in Portugal on Saturday morning and I didn't really think of showing him the church until mid-week, but by Sunday he was pressing me to take him to see it. We finally got the change to go on Monday and he made me get up at 0600 so that we'd didn't get a chance to see the sunrise over the ocean and the Church! It was so COLD that day!
At the Church he started acting funny. He's usually the picture taker, he even takes pictures of rocks! But this time he just kept pacing back and forth. When we were holding each other during the sunrise I could hear his heart beating a mile an hour!
All of a sudden he pushed me away from him and dropped to his knee! I couldn't believe it! I started shaking and I can't really remember much, but he pulled out the box and I just broke out into a huge smile! And I remember saying yes and taking the box and opening to find the ring inside. lol. I can't stop smiling!! lol.
We rushed back home and my mom was super excited; however, I guess, at least in that town, women don't get engagement rings, so my other family members, weren't as excited about the ring as my mom and I. It was very interesting, because they kept asking what he was bringing to the marriage, was i getting a house or furniture?
When we got back to the states the first thing I did once I got off the plane was buy a ton of bridal magazines! I know, mostly a waste of money, but I just couldn't help it.
