THE STORY OF US » The Proposal » Beautiful sunrise proposal at the Reflecting Pool!

posted 2 years ago

The night prior to our proposal, my FI casually asked me if I had wanted to catch the Sunrise in DC the next morning.  We had been wanting to wake up early and catch a sunrise for a while, so i happily agreed, thinking nothing of it.  (Although i had my suspicions due to Engagement Brain!!) But, despite it being the weekend of both our 1 year 9 month dating anniversary, and 2 year anniversary from when we first met, i pushed the idea out of my head, and said, Nah, its not gonna happen, just enjoy!

So I wake up at 5, and i hit snooze on my alarm, and end up sleeping in an extra 15 minutes.  When my alarm goes off again, I wake up and wake up the boy, and let him know that its actually 5:15, not 5, so we actually have to hurry IF we still wanted to go...(We had only had 3 hours sleep at this point, so i was starting to think No! But dragged myself out of bed anyway.)  The boy JUMPS out of bed and reminds me that we need to leave SOON! (this should have been Clue #1 that something was going to happen!!!)

I contemplate not showering, figuring that it would be so early, we would just come back to bed after catching it, but decide ultimately to shower.  After showering, Engagement Brain kicks in AGAIN and forces me to put a LITTLE bronzer on my face (HAHA - WHat if?!?!?!) BUT I wear my glasses instead of my contacts because my eyes were bothering me something terrible!  Once i finish showering, I notice the boy is ironing his polo (Clue #2!!!)...Now, he ALWAYS irons his shirts, BUT if we are short on time, he will throw it into the dryer rather than iron...So i ask him Why are you ironing your shirt? its 5 in the morning! To which he replies, Well...we are going to get some breakfast after and I just want to look nice!

So we are taking the short trip into DC, and Engagement Brain kicks in AGAIINNN and I glance over at him.,..He is acting as cool as a cucumber..THEN i scan his pants....NO RING BOX!!! OK, Martina, you know for a FACT that its not gonna happen today, so just calm down! (Throw her off the trail tactic # 1! DONT CARRY THE RING BOX but keep the ring discreetly hidden in a little pocket in your jeans!)  So I just sit back, and just relax and enjoy our drive...

Throw her off the trail tactic #2! Ask her WHATS the best exit to take to get to the monuments....Huh?!?! why are you asking me, dont YOU know? it was your idea!!! and we have been here SEVERAL times before!! lol  So Im OFFICIALLY now pushing engagement completely out of my mind.

We park and head to the Washington monument and begin taking pictures...Then we walk towards the World War II Memorial and to the Reflecting Pool and at this point, i am SLIGHTLY irritated bc our backs are to the sun rise (see picture of Washington Monument in background...we were walking AWAY from that monument to the Lincoln Memorial so our backs were to the sun rise!!) , so I keep turning around every couple of minutes to see how much of the sun has risen above the horizon so that we can get a beautiful shot of it!  Finally, about halfway through our walk down the Reflecting Pool path, the boy stops and has us walk off the path...onto the grass...Again...DARN ENGAGEMENT BRAIN!!! I think that he WOULDNT get down on one knee into the grass!! Push it out of your mind!! So he starts talking about where we are in our relationship, and what we have yet to accomplish, and God's purpose for bringing us together...at this point he flashes me the CUTEST smile EVER, takes one step back, pulls my beautiful ring out of his pocket, gets down on one knee (on wet grass mind you!!) and asks me to be his wife!  I said yes (I remembered to say that first!! HAHA) At first I was in shock, and my legs started shaking and went all rubbery and I started kissing him all over the face!!! And then I broke down and started balling like a two year old...It was the most perfect engagement ever!
