my favorite guy is a master of surprises. he has orchestrated a spectacular birthday surprise for his favorite gal every year for 8 years. and it amazes me every time.
so as i turned 30 on this very special year, i figured this birthday would have some epic, firework-display surprises in store for me. a luxe tropical getaway? a wine country, mouth-watering meal with lots of truffles? or that gorgeous, 17" macbook pro in my dreams?
since my best girlfriend had her wedding the day before my actual birthday, i had decided to fill my special day with my family, friends, food and dancing. my cherished lazy sunday would be spent with the bf and our charming corgi, napoleon, as birthday celebration part deux.
my second day of my third decade began with a champagne brunch in bed, courtesy of veuve clicquot , philz coffee & mama's on washington square. sugary french toast, seasonal berries, bold coffee, sweet mimosas.....and my idea of a meal in heaven. this day was off to a marvelous start.
now for the gift! i was 99% convinced i would be the proud new macbook pro owner in a matter of minutes. so i closed my eyes, stuck out my arms, and waited for that big white box.....
"open your eyes."
it was my bf. sitting next to me. no big white box. just my favorite guy.
i'll spare you the warm and fuzzy stuff but i will show you my birthday surprise.....
it's a too-beautiful ring, designed by gordon aatlo, award winning jewelry designer and my bestest girlfriend's grandfather. it's the perfect ring. for me. which means....i'm engaged. it's ridiculous. i still kind of can't believe it.
and as it turns out, i was kind of right regarding the wine country gift surprise. we had a glorious engagement day celebration planned, thanks to rob and his two fantastic friends, greg & chris. the two chauffeured us in a baby blue town car (yes, i said baby blue) to:
tomales bay in point reyes for an exquisite oyster lunch
hop kiln winery in russian river for divine wines and creamy cheeses and
zin in healdsburg for a to-die-for farm fresh feast.
greg, a professional photographer, also documented the day with his fancy camera, so once i get those pics i'll post some of the them to add some color around my tale.
in short, it was the most magical day and i wanted to write it down so i could always remember how perfect it really was.....and share it with all of you :)
xo, s

a chic dress that is comfortable and can be worn a million ways. a simple, brilliant idea.

for our charming destination wedding on the beach, my favorite guy will be decked out in j crew's fine stripe cotton ludlow suit in pale gray (called faded black) and his cool sperry top sider sneaks.

ah, to be a bride.
zany? always. overwhelming? rarely. super fun? yes!
so the big day is ten-ish months away. and after many hours of creative brainstorming on our couch, rob & i successfully tackled most of the big stuff. you know...the island. the date. the venues. the wedding party. the planner. the decor inspiration. the suit. the dress. {yes, the dress! }
and my most favorite part...
the terrific team who captures the crazy day.
you know how most girls dream of their perfect wedding dress for years? not me. i was dreaming of my perfect wedding photos.
and at last, we found our guy.
he is awesome.
he said yes!
and i did my happy dance for a week.
here are some of my favorite bits of his work- dreamy, cool and always clever. i'm a big fan and maybe you are too?
max, see you on the beach!
