mary-alice-me on "My Vegetarian Luncheon"

I searched and searched for a caterer who had a good vegetarian luncheon menu. My wedding was in rural central Kentucky, and I feared being so far from a city would be detrimental to my menu. The venue's recommended caterer wanted to serve lasagna. While I love a good veggie lasagna, that was not what I pictured as my Memorial Day wedding luncheon.

I found a caterer out of Lexington who was willing to travel just over an hour to cater my event for 35 guests. Wow! Plus, the food was very good. I placed printed menus on each table and the food was served buffet style because it was more along the lines of heavy appetizers and I wanted my guests to be as adventurous (or not) as they chose.

Buffet Menu:

Silver dollar falafel with tzatziki

Curried ricotta & toasted pita points

Spicy cilantro & jack quesadillas

Polenta crostini in these varieties:

Red onion confit and smoked mozzarella, eggplant parmesan, hummus

Grilled vegetable kabobs with tahini

Vegetarian spring rolls with Soy, spicy mustard, sweet & sour sauces

Fresh cut fruit and dark chocolate dip

Unfortunately I don't have pictures of our food, but it was so fantastic that I still have to tell you about it.

We hired an off-the-beaten-path caterer from a small town about 50 miles southwest of where our wedding was. They are not used to catering for weddings, especially ones for 300 people! The originally quoted us $8 per person which was $2 cheaper than any other caterer we'd found AND the food was a million times better! Plus, they didn't have extra fees for delivery and set up either.

So here was our menu--and keep in mind we are in the midwest and like us some home cooked goodies!

For the meats we had:
Fried chicken
Smoked pork tenderloin

Starches:
Au gratin potato casserole
Parslied potates

Salads:
Garden salad with choice of dressing
Pea salad (for my mom..I think it's gross!)
Cauliflower salad (for the groom..he has a thing for cauliflower)

Other items:
Green beans
Dinner rolls
Water and tea

It was served buffet style and rather than fancy china place settings--knowing my guests would include lots of toddlers--I happened to come across an Easter special at Sam's Club that included a package of 50 blue, square plastic dinner plates and 50 yellow, square salad plates. I snagged up 8 packages (at $10 each, it was a steal because just 40 clear dinner plates were $10!) and our plate situation was solved.

Ok, so wanna know what the final total on the food was??

$1250!!!!!!! Yes, you read that right! Because we skimped on plates, dessert, plastic ware, cups, etc. and the caterer didn't have to provide that, they cut the cost down to food only! The food was very us, very comfortable, and everyone raved about how fantastic it all tasted. Who says you have to serve lobster and filet mignon?!? No offense to those of you who have/will have steak and lobster...we just couldn't afford $35 a person!!

The biggest hit of the wedding, food-wise, was definitely the "chocolate lantern trio" we served for dessert. They dimmed all the lights, and then the servers brought out the dessert, which included an edible wafer cookie with candle inside. It was pretty cool:

The only two things I knew I wanted from the beginning of our engagement were a barn and BBQ. Luckily, I got both. We feasted on BBQ ribs, fried chicken, cornmeal crusted catfish, roasted potatoes, macaroni and cheese with stewed tomatoes and corn on the cob. Mike from Great Valley Catering/Meredith Manor did an amazing job. Everything was delicious! All of our guests raved about the food!

For our cocktail reception we had 5 hors d' eouvres that were tray passed including a chicken skewer, beef skewer, seafood stuffed mushroom, a salami coronet filled with cream cheese and chinese egg rolls.

We had a 3 course dinner with caesar salad to start. This was hand plated by the servers at each seat which was a very nice touch. The entree was a duet entree (our guests didnt have to choose) that was made up of my favorite meal and Brad's favorite meal, chicken picatta and a filet with boursin cheese melted on top.

And lots of it.

Mr. MJ's mom and dad selected a caterer from Badger, Minnesota called the Twins Corner Cafe. They served barbecue ribs, chicken and stuffing, and other delicious dishes at our picnic.

The beverage selections ranged from soda and juice to beer and wine.

And of course, there was cake. :)
