maverbeck on "My $600 Vera Wang Gown!"

I really thought I wanted a knee length dress I fell in love with on Etsy. It was a local designer, and I LOVED the design! Until...I saw it up close. The designer doesn't hem (or even heat seal) many of her chiffon/organza edges, so it was LITERALLY unraveling! I know this was a modern edgy look she was going for...but I couldn't hang :)

SO--I polled my classroom of 22 college Anatomy and Physiology students, and floor length won! (Go classic! one student said) The only reason I thought about knee length in the first place was because I'm getting married in a park. But one of my students pointed out how elegant a long gown looks outside.

It didn't take me long to find a gown I love. Only problem...it was around $5,000. A friend of my introduced me to this local shop that will custom make a gown for you out of silk for less than $1,000. I visited the shop and I fell in love. Customer service, attention to detail---all top notch. So I am taking my photo of my $5,000 dress in, and they are going to custom make it to fit me! And even better, if I don't like it...they'll just put it on the racks with their in-stor inventory!

My dress will be in ivory, not black. I love the huge coutoure bow!

And I have loved her since the moment we met. I bought her in ivory silk. And I am working hard at the gym to pull her off.

Loved my dress: Fit and Flare, in Light Gold by Sottero Midgley. The brooch was the inspiration behind everything from the invite to the cake. The top was beaded as you can see in the detail shot

I loved my wedding dress. I was one of those (few?) brides that wasn't thrilled about dress shopping. I delayed as long as possible. But once I had this one on, one of the last ones at the 4th store, I didn't want to take it off. :)

Being a curvy woman I knew I had to be practical. I am self-conscious like no other and I really did fear the day of going to find me a dress. I was terrified actually. On January 2nd I went with my best friend to try on some dresses at David's Bridal. I wanted to look there first since I knew they would have my size and I wouldn't have to "imagine" what it looked like wearing a smaller gown clipped to the strapless bra and not fitting properly. The experience was okay. I didn't find anything I loved. The consultant was nice but she didn't go and pick out dresses like I asked her to. I told her the top three I definitely wanted to try on and after that I was open to anything. It didn't happen. When I got home I reviewed all four dresses I had my friend take a picture of me in and I cried my eyes out. I looked horrible. Yes, I know it's my fault that I haven't worked out and I need to, but I didn't think I looked that bad until I saw myself in the dress.

After a month of trying to decide what to do, I finally just said, "I'm going and I'm going today!" and I was going alone. I called David's Bridal and spoke to a woman who was very nice and she told me she had just the consultant for me and to be there at 6:00pm. I was actually excited! I found a few more dresses I really wanted to try on and an hour later I had my dress. Come September I will marry my fiance wearing a dress I feel not only comfortable and confident in, but I also felt even a little sexy! I couldn't believe it and that's when the tears came. I didn't bawl or really cry, I just teared up and that made my consultant cry too :) I cannot tell you how nice it was to go by myself with no other opinions to sway me and to also go during the middle of the week. I was the only bride there :)

Tomorrow my mom is coming down to see the dress and I can't wait until I see mine in person come mid-May in the ivory color.

Here she is!

David's Bridal Style #9T9861

The dress is has an A-line made of satin with a side-draped bodice and off-the shoulder neckline with a pretty lace-up back and chapel length train.

I recommend this dress to any girl out there. Whether you are curvy or petite, it does wonders. The dress is also lightweight so it won't make you hot during the summer months--which what I'll need over Labor Day weekend.

P.S. I will not be wearing the gloves or the tiara---they just aren't me. I have to decide if I want a veil or a veil with two small flowers in my hair near the nape of my neck or just flowers. Decisions! Yeah! :D

Even though I told myself not to fall in love with the first dress I tried on, ultimately, it was the dress I chose! I went to several different stores and tried on many dresses. But at every store, I managed to also try on "my" dress. In the end, it was obvious that with a slight modification, it was the perfect dress for me!

My dress is Casablanca 1930. Normally, it is a halter, but I changed it to shoulder straps. I can't wait to see it! Mine will be all ivory.
