We had talked about taking a trip to the Grand Canyon after we visited our friend in Las Vegas who was getting married in November. Here is our story:

November 11th

We drove from Texas to Roswell and arrived at 6:30 am. We visited a few places, did not see any real aliens. We did see some nice statues that resembled aliens and a cool museum. Then we drove straight to Albuquerque and stayed overnight.

November 12th At 7 in the morning we left from Albuquerque to Las Vegas for our friend’s wedding and arrived 15 minutes before it started. During my friend’s reception, she told me how happy we were able to attend her wedding. Efrain and I stayed out late and then headed back after seeing taking a scenic drive around Las Vegas.

November 13th –

We left early the next day, and we managed to see the Hoover Dam and take some pictures. If you ever get a chance, this place is great. That day, we had drop off our small dog because she can only walk about 30 minutes until she lays down for a break. It was around 8 pm when we were getting close Tusayan. We figured we could get some food at one of the local restaurants. By the time, we arrived and checked in, we found out all the restaurants were closed. We grabbed some chips, dip, and more fruit and settled in for the evening.

November 14th – the big day!

That morning we watched the sunrise at the South Rim.

Originally, Efrain planned to reserve us bikes so we could ride through the Grand Canyon. The ranger told him that the bike company was in between contracts. We decided to move on to our hike. There was a bus leaving in 20 minutes on the South Kaibab Trail. By the time we arrived the tour had already started. We finally caught up with them but the tour started heading back to the entrance. We kept hiking and stopped near a rock formation overlooking the Colorado River (Tipoff Point) for a break. Some hikers offered to take a picture of us. We did not realize at the time, but we had just finished a 4.8 mile hike.

I was beginning to get a little hungry. Luckily, Efrain had grabbed us some jerky and fruit. Then around noon we had reached the Colorado River for another break. By then we were a bit tired. He was carrying about 10 bottles of water and I was carrying about 8 bottles of water. I had just finished drinking my fourth bottle of water and he wanted to keep going to Phantom Ranch. We saw some more hikers. They told us it would be too dark by the time we made it to the ranch. Since we did not have a reservation we decided to this would be a good stopping point and head back.

Efrain turned on the camera and started filming. He pointed it to me and told me to tell everyone how much I was enjoying our trip. Then, he started saying it has been such a great long adventure. He placed the camera on the rock which was still recording and I started saying, yeah it’s been really good!

He did a bit of bit of magic and the next thing I know I was wearing a ring and he was on one knee proposing to me. I was in so much shock that I could not say anything for a few moments. Then I started getting teary eyed and told him, of course yes! We kissed and hugged. I did a little dance well actually it look more I was hobbling around because I was tired. Some hikers were passing by and asked if I was okay. I told them that Efrain just proposed to me. They congratulated us and told us what an amazing proposal!

After lunch we headed back and this time the hike was ascending. This is a killer hike and so glad we did it in November instead of over the summer. We kept taking short breaks along the trail.  As we reached the final hour, we started slowing down and we struggled to finish. We were the last hikers and made it back right before sunset.

We caught the shuttle bus back to the parking lot. I could not wait to tell my family. We decided to celebrate at a nearby restaurant in Tusayan. After ordering, I called my parents and they put me on speakerphone. I started telling them what just happened, and my mom shouted, we knew! We were waiting for you to call us! I could not believe they knew all this time! They are so happy for us! After dinner, I called my friend who just gotten married in Las Vegas. She told me, I knew too and told me I am so happy for you both! Then, after calling a couple more of my close friends, they told me we wanted to call you to congratulate you but did not want to spoil the surprise! My face hurt so much that day from smiling that I did not even notice how much pain I was in from my legs until the next morning. In less than two months, I will marry my best friend who I have been with for 11 years!
