THE STORY OF US » The Proposal » What proposal?

posted by peachapple48 2 weeks ago

Basically, we had a non-proposal.  Mostly I don't mind-- I always wanted it to feel authentic, and well, ours certainly was.  Sometimes, though, I can't help but feel a twinge of jealously when I hear about the elaborate production a loving boyfriend staged for his then-girlfriend.  There is a part of me that thinks it just sounds fabulous, and another part that thinks-- "WAIT a minute.  Why didn't my man love me enough to _______(fill in blank)."  I've been told by people wiser than me, however, that I am not allowed to hold this against my man for the rest of his life.  And if the end result of our non-proposal was that I get to be with said (sometimes-but-rarely bad) man for the rest of my life, well, I guess that's not such a bad deal after all.  On that note, here is the story (in the third person... because... umm... I'm protecting our anonymity?!):

On October 10th, 2008, a mysterious event took place.  None of the eyewitnesses can agree on what happened exactly, but here is what we do know:

-A year after dating Jane Dee and John Doe moved into together a year after dating.  A few fights ensued over whether John's beer posters equaled appropriate home decoration or where Jane would fit her shoe collection, but all appeared to be as usual (well, even a bit better than usual... they really liked living together).

-On October 9th, A month after moving into together, Jane Dee and John Doe had a party at their house.  A friend of Jane's had gotten engaged, and a few other individuals inquired when Jane and John might do the same.  The record states that Jane said with shock, "We're nowhere near it!  Don't even ask."  Jane and John had mutually agreed that they'd see how a year of living together went before making any bigger plans.

-October 10th is when accounts begin to diverge, so we will cover it in detail.  We do have agreement on the following details

10 am- John and Jane go to a nearby restaurant and eat heaping plates of delicious breakfast tacos

11 am- John and Jane get back home and slump onto the couch, holding their hurting bellies

11:15 am- John starts talking about how much he loves Jane.  Jane suspects John is trying to be amorous.  She ignores him and concentrates on digesting.

11:20 am- John is still talking about love, now in a somewhat nonsensical way, and Jane notices that his heart is beating really fast and he looks kind of nervous.  This is where the accounts diverge.

According to Jane, she then asked, "What are you talking about?!  Do you, like, want to marry me?" in a clarifying manner.

According to John, Jane asked, "Do you want to marry me?"  in a propositional manner.

Despite the divergent accounts, the end result was the same.  The couple decided they were engaged, placed calls to the parents, and began the romantic process of shopping for an engagement ring on Amazon.com.
